There are dangerous temptations; uncontrollable forces my tear you apart; one might well die from one's quest. You might meet some famous people, as well as some non-famous ones. Through Icarus you might see the reflections of the athletes of the Munich Massacre (Munich Olympics, 1972), Ben Johnson, Jesse Owens, the tyranny of the majority as well as the non-majority; base human desires, jealousy, dreams, determination, endurance. Good and evil will be at work. Everyone will try to win. Icarus will try to fly.

Confession: i wasnt studying for the past two weeks. CAUSE I WAS TRYING TO DO MY LUNWEN AND IT IS KILLIN' ME. orz.

apparently there has been some confusion with the previous post.

NOTE:
The positions of captain and vice-captain will be condensed into one for simplicity.
If you want to be a captain/vice-captain, it will be considered as one choice, so that you can still run for the MORE glamourous positions of treasurer/secretary/quartermaster(:.

Unlike last year, we will not be going by a voting process (undemocratic i know, JTB).
All positions WILL be decided based on your performance, during the INTERVIEW AND YOUR TRAININGS/OUTSIDE TRAININGS/PRIVATE TRAININGS/A DIVS.

Hello everyone, I will be visiting you tomorrow to see you all NOT get owned. So anyway, just some prolix (I just like the word) advice to all of you before my hair gets owned in 3 days.

DO NOT FALL SICK. ESPECIALLY NOT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE COMPETITION. Take it from someone who experienced it firsthand; you will feel like utter shit if you have to be subbed in the latter half of the competition and have to watch your sub bowl for you when you know you should be the one on the lanes. So drink water like a dying camel and get onto your fricking bed (SRSLY TREASURE IT NAO WHEN YOU CAN, ESPECIALLY THE GUYS) 3 hours earlier than usual, at least for the next few weeks.

If you are screwing up and don't know why, don't sit there like a noob and think you can handle it. Call Aloysius over and ask for his help, or get someone else who's not bowling to call him over. This also works the OTHER way round. If Aloysius tells you to do something and you end up dying on every shot after that, tell him it's not working and that you want to change back. Tell him seriously and he'll understand.

So then, since I put a girl group video up the last time, it's time to throw in the guy groups! I think this song fits the situation now at least - if you eliminate the parts on the group name (2PM) and imagine it as HCBowl, or something. And if not, at least it gets your heart pumping and ready. Also, the lines like 'the wounds on my body increase one by one' are terribly fitting for our resident fail bowler yuxuan. Rofl.

For those who hadnt been bowling consistently these few days, dont fret. stay focus, and bowl good shots. never let your string of bad shots prevent you from bowling a good shot.

stay low and follow through.

I'm not sure if it would work for you, but this worked for me: Listening to No Boundaries, either kris allen or adam lambert's version, makes me motivated. Hopefully all of you will be at your best during a div. both mentally and physically.

I checked with the people working there, and there will be lanes at around 1++. So I told those tards that I'll need at least 3-4 lanes at 1.30pm. DO get back to me ASAP and let me know if you're coming down. I need to get back to them so we definitely have the lanes we need. If I do not get your reply latest by the time I call them back - which should be around tomorrow night - I will confer upon you the title of 'Sicheng'. Trust me you do NOT want that.

Next year, the criteria to play in the A-division, is a 180 average (for guys).

Not kidding. Pencil-hair (aka aloysius) said it. You can start cursing now.

But is a 180 really hard to get? As our master of sparing (Jun Yan!) has shown, closing frames isnt hard. A game with no open frames will almost definitely be >180. unless really damn suey >_<.

So it really boils down to how you bowl, related to the eq,

No. of pinfalls = [(T)(E)(Z)(L)] / (t) ,where

T = amount of time spent bowling,

E = how efficient are you at learning from your errors

Z = your level of bowling zainess

L = Luckiness

t = time

as yuxuan puts it, t, Z and L cant be changed.

So what you can do is change your T and E. But E is also hard to change because you need someone who can spot your mistakes.

So T is the main thing that you can change. But how much of it has everyone put into bowling outside of training (Wed & Fri)? Frankly, 4hrs are not enough. From Wed to Fri, yes you will improve, but over the span of Sat to Tues w/o self-training, your skill level will drop like a demand curve.

So first, ask yourself this question, how do you prioritize bowling in your life? If its one of the highest, then please put in more effortttt. Because srsly, our standard right now sux.

No time is not an excuse. If you no time, make time.
No money isnt either. Dun care, you better lie, cheat or steal.
The ball is not heavy. It is as light as a 14-pound feather.

After promos, maybe we can have a new unofficial training day? And really, please self-train whenever you can!! Must not disappoint our seniors!

hi all j1s who did not attend cca on friday and those who, by chance, missed the announcement:

apparently, we only have three more trainings before training will be suspended for promos, dated 29th, 31st July and 1st Aug.

Due to the 8th inter-primary bowling championship held at The Chevrons, our wednesday trainings will be at OCC. While the friday training will tentatively be at the Planet Bowl in CSC near little india. We will confirm the details with you on a later date.

meanwhile, hope to see all of you, in your best conditions, on the lane again with FULL attendence.

side note:
not trying to be superstitious but i think hcbowl seems to offend some god of illness and injuries( if there ever is such a thing).
the only team, with all three reserves on the lane in during a divs. (*not that bad cause more get to bowl* though one of reserves was feeling unwell too!
one junior who not too recently sprained her ankle during pe. (sounds familiar? history repeats.)
i dont know what they call it (extra bone?!?!) growing in some j1 bowlers' thumb

someone (ex quartermummy) commented that this place was dead and we should organize one more..erm outing/gathering/break from studying session.

Well, the more we delay, the more the seniors will not be able to come, hence are the seniors fine with next wednesday? you can either bowl alongside us, when we are training or meet us after our training at 5.30. however, we will not guarantee that all juniors will be present in the latter situation.

The Concept.

As pokemon grew up in an ulu forest with poor TV reception, all it knew was teletubies, sailormoon and the adventures of underdog. One day, pokemon found its way to civilisation. Curious about what others were actually callin it, pokemon went online and found the following explanation about itself from the famous wikipedia web.
In most incarnations of the fictional Pokémon universe, a Trainer (aka HCBowl) that encounters a wild Pokémon is able to capture that Pokémon by throwing a specially designed, mass-producible tool called a Poké Ball at it (probably a ka-mu-ra). If the Pokémon is unable to escape the confines of the Poké Ball, that Pokémon is officially considered under the ownership of that Trainer.(o.o) Afterward, it will obey whatever commands its new master issues to it from that point onward, unless the Trainer demonstrates enough of a lack of experience that the Pokémon would rather act on its own accord.(muahaha) Trainers can send out any of their Pokémon to wage non-lethal battles against other Pokémon; if the opposing Pokémon is wild, the Trainer can capture that Pokémon with a Poké Ball, increasing his or her collection of creatures. Pokémon already owned by other Trainers cannot be captured, except under special circumstances in certain games. If a Pokémon fully defeats an opponent in battle (aka A divs) so that the opponent is knocked out (i.e., "faints"), the winning Pokémon gains experience and may level up. hellos! its my turn to blog! since im sick of mugging and i kinda have to wait till 1am to sleep! rights. im nt good wif words. so here goes nothing. pardon my pathetic language. yupps! so aniwae. the chalet kinda marks the official stepping down of the seniors! but thennn. we are still a member of hcbowl! so dun be sad ppl! (: but its really quite sad bahs! alright. now i dunnoe where to begin.

to the seniors [my darling batchmates!]
we have been together for a year going two. i guess the experience that i have had in hcbowl with you guys is priceless and definitely memorable. and i will probably miss the times we had together. like for example. our weekly trainings [even though sometimes we have no trainings at all]. how we used to go for dinner after training when we were still at yishun with some of our seniors. a divison 08. jts 08. maf 08. eoy chalet 08. orientation 09. a div 09. jts 09. lols. something like tt. maybe i missed out some. i guess perhaps. through this journey. we have known each other better in a way or another. even though we may not know each and everyone of us very well. but definitely better when we first met [when we were still strangers!] yupps. and well. without training, we will probably be meeting each other less and stuff. but i guess. we will still stay as a batch! hahas 18 of us (: yupps. now our focus will definitely be on MUGGING. Now that the chalet is over (the bbq should be at least), I guess it officially marks the stepping-down of the J2 batch 2008-2009. It has indeed been a great year imo, and Im thankful for great juniors like you guys, and girls. Somehow, I still find it awfully short and we might not have been as bonded as most of us would have liked, but...whatever, I hope we all enjoyed the times we trained hard under aloysius (imagine being literally 'under' him. not fun). In any case, I apologize for not being at the bbq or hand-over ceremony, not exactly the perfect ending I had in mind, but thanks anyway. If you think we have been great seniors - just for tag, gay seniors- then I implore and beseech you all to be equally good seniors to the next batch of HCbowlers. Right, and to the newly formed EXCO, all the best tanking #$%#@#@^ and leading the team to greater heights.

I'm thinking of putting all of your messages in the "credits" of the montage, when everyone is emo and about to cry after seeing so many photos blabla. So yeah, please email me what you want to say to others, hopefully by next friday before the chalet.

In a format something like this:

So I was bored attempting to study for it tomorrow, and since DC and I have discussed the topic of ball speed for very long, I decided to do some calculations. (COME ON FIZZIKS STUDENTS LAUGH AT THE BIO AND ARTS PEOPLE WHO DON'T UNDERSTAND)

Lane Length from Foul line to Head pin (60 feet) = 18.288m
1 kg = 2.2 pounds (roughly)

For example, let's say dc hits the head pin in 2.8s (which he does, or at least around +/- 0.1s) with his 14 pound ball, and he wants to improve by 0.1s to 2.7s instead.

Speed of a 2.7s ball = 18.288/2.7 = 6.7733m/s
Kinetic energy of a 2.7s, 14pound ball (ignoring torque) = 1/2 mv^2 = 1/2 x (14/2.2) x 6.7733^2 = 145.98 J
Assuming DC throws all balls of whatever mass with the same energy,
Speed of a 2.8s ball = 18.288/2.8 = 6.5314m/s
Mass of ball thrown at 2.8s (original speed) with energy of 2.7s, 14pound ball = (145.98x2)/(6.5314^2) = 6.84 kg = 15.056 pounds

So what does this mean? If you want to throw a faster ball, for every 0.1s that you cut from the time your ball takes to reach the headpin, you require the same amount of energy as if you were throwing a ball that is 1 pound heavier at your original slower speed (i.e. Ding Chun needs to be able to throw a 15 pound ball instead of a 14 pound ball at his original speed in order to throw his 14 pound ball 0.1s faster). 0.1s -> 1 pound. So what aloysius was doing for some of us with the 1 pound weights, if we trained long enough with them we would bowl 0.1s faster without them.

P.S. This experiment is riddled with assumptions, but meh whatever.

For those J1s,For Elections/passing down during the chalet:
Day1: We'll be doing elections/voting in evening on 9th June (after check-in) then interview for various positions at night, after dinner till late.
Day2:We will discuss and settle everything while u have your funky activities. We will reveal results either by evening/night and passing down dinner/JTS.

Just to reiterate what our ex-captain has mentioned in the post below.
who wish to run for Bowling Exco positions, please send me an email (sweetfanatic@hotmail.com), stating your name and the positions you want to try for. Please note that you have to choose a minimum of 2 posts.
In other words, you can run for Captains and Secretary or Secretary and Treasurer, etc.The positions available are:
3 Captains (which includes Overall Captain, Girls vice-captain and Boys vice-captain)
1 Secretary
1 Treasurer
1 Quarter Master (Activities I/C)
Note:
* Running for captains will be done in the manner that the one with the most votes will be the Overall Captain, and the next most will Vice-captains.
*Voting will be equal weightage for seniors and juniors.

Hey ppl! Here’s my very first post. Bowling is seriously freaking tiring today. After only four hours of sleep before comps and starvation due to the lack of time to eat a proper lunch, I manage to stand and sleep on the mrt today! Almost fell down on the bus while dozing off. Zzz. Don’t try picturing that. Anyway, well done ppl, you manage to survive these two days. I know it’s discouraging to dao the cheering squad but when you are bowling, it’s really hard to care about all those cheering. however, I still believe that it’s really important to continue to cheer for each other, one way or another, it will help. The cheering squad today was pretty pro too! Maybe you should go oooooooooooooooooooooooooo…pick it up!/it’s ok! When ppl never spare cause the endings are quite lousy! Haha. No offence. Shall cut the crap.

Team Meeting 230409
Hello. For the benefit of those who werent able to make it for the meeting today, these are the stuff that Mr Ho has gone through :

There will be training on the 29th of April 2009 for the school team at chevrons from 3 to 5 pm. Its the Wednesday right smack in the middle of our A divisions, and transport will be provided just like every other normal school training.

COMPETITION
FYI, guys are in squad B and girls are in squad D. I will forward the softcopy of the sacred A division briefing folder to everyone soon. Do look out for that.

If we are bowling in the morning...
Please make your way down on your own.
Competitors be there by 0700. Supporters by 0730. There should be NO late comers. I WILL TRY NOT TO BE LATE MYSELF. And if I can do it, so should you. After the competition, there will be a bus back to school and lessons will resume promptly at 1pm for we are only officially excused from 8am -1pm.

If we are bowling in the afternoon...
We will be excused from 10.30am onwards. Grab a quick bite before gathering with your equipment, or as Mr Ho puts it, "your barang-barang". The bus will come at 11am and we are expected to reach OCC by 11.30am. Please do not be late.

On the 7th of May 2009, food will be catered for us, as we will be bowling in both the morning and afternoon timeslots. No need to worry, we wont starve you.

IMPORTANT RULES TO TAKE NOTE OF:
1. If you are ill, you MUST produce an MC and pass it to MR HO [not your ct].
2. Competitors: you are required to sign after the game. DO check your scores and sign only after you are sure its correct, and that there are no discrepancies.Any changes after that will NOT be entertained.
3. Supporters are to wear Bowling Tees and school skirt/pants. Do sms Mr Ho if you will not be able to make it. Only MCs, parents letters or official reasons will be accepted. You have to seek special permission to be excused for any other reason in the world.
4. STRICTLY no jeans, cargo pants and shorts of any kind will be permitted (for guys).
5. All bowlers in the team will have to be similarly attired. No different coloured pants/shorts allowed.
6. Guys are to wear BLACK PANTS for competition! Make sure you have at LEAST 2 pairs of long black pants/black long pants. You wont want to wear the same pair for 2 consecutive days. Im sure I wont want to be near you if you wear the same pair for 2 consecutive days.
7. LANE ETIQUETTE. DO use your brains when you bowl. People dont like to be interrupted when they are preparing for a shot. You might not feel the same way, but PLEASE think about others. At the very least, show the world that the Hwa Chong Institution College Section Bowling Team knows basic lane etiquette.

Having said all that, a folder will be sent to everyone regarding everything you need to know about the A divs, including the lane pattern. I dont know how accurate it is nor how to read the damn thing, but its in there.

2. Slow and steady, but do not dilly dally. Take your time, but do not pose for too long or wait until everyone is off the approaches.

3. Stick to your own approach. Stay on your own approach at all times.

4. Back off after delivery. Step back off the approach after making each delivery.

5. Use your own ball. Do not use another player's ball without permission.

6. Do not tamper approaches. Do not use chalk, resin or talcum powder to condition approaches. Others may like it the way it is.

7. Everyone concentrates. Good bowling requires concentration. Do not interfere when others bowl, as you would want the same when it is your turn. Confine teases at the bench or locker rooms.

8. Patience with pinsetting. Be ready to bowl only after the pinsetting machine has completed its cycle and the sweepbar is raised.

9. Respect the equipment. Respect the equipment, avoid lofting the ball, as it hurts your game and damages the lane.

10. Be a gracious winner and loser. Play to win, but be a gracious loser if you are on the short end of the count. Cheer up, you can always bowl to win again!

Congrats everyone who made the team!!! :D I'm sure each of us know the hard work that we've put in, be it bowling our hearts out during trainings trying to get the technique right, hit the line, rev the ball, gain speed etc; or bowling extra during the weekends/other weekdays (cause practice is super important! though it may not make us perfect just yet, but we'll be closer to perfection haha) In the past few months, I really do think our batch has grown closer as a team, having gotten the chance to know each other better and spending good moments together be it bowling or eating lunch/dinner or otherwise! Even though we may not have the capacity to trash everyone to the ground, we can still aim to do our best! Make ourselves (and the school :X) proud! Haha. And hopefully the school will sponsor us more next year!

To the juniors, I, and the other seniors too I'm sure, am proud of the improvement you've made in the last barely 3 to 4 months... you've come a long way, and you guys definitely have potential! So even if you don't make the team this year, don't be demoralised! There's still plenty of time to improve further :) In the meantime, support the rest of us, and take the chance during A divs to watch people bowling so you can learn their style/technique/coolness and hopefully emulate them in time!

it's the last week of hols! and what better way to celebrate than to have a friendly match with VJC, SRJC and SAJC. the friendly will be a mixed trios format, with at least one guy and one girl each trio. each school will be sending 3 trios. sadly, cos it's a private club, no supporters are allowed. :( it'll be held at the Chinese Swimming Club's NEW SPORTS COMPLEX, so be there by 1030 am on 7th January, Wednesday. don't walk into this damn cheena-looking entrance:

after you see this, walk a bit more and turn left at the first lane where you can turn in, there should be a security guard post further in, at the entrance to the new sports complex.

ok aside from that, i asked him when he's free to do private group trainings. details are as follows:

Weekday afternoons, 2-4pm or 3-5pm. $30 per person, if it's a group of 4. a group of 6 will be cheaper. lane charges have been included. if you're interested, tag on tagboard the days and timings you'd prefer. alternatively, felix suggested the Chinese Swimming Club coach Uncle Rick. ruiyi said that his group session cost more than $40. go to him if you have the money, he's a good coach.

hmm ok, so that settles the private trainings. if you're self-training, work on

- *ACCURACY* because sparing helps a lot... and you have to be accurate before everything can fall in place!

- RELEASE / REVS, as dingchun puts it. first must make sure that your wrist is locked and you don't turn too early (girls, take note). hand behind your ball at point of release, then lift and turn only at the point of release, to generate rev. then... follow through!

hello people! the exco had a meeting this morning to settle some issues. (: and here are the details.

1. Team Discipline

Most people would have notice the poor attendance rate for training sessions during the holidays. This should not be the happening as it kind of reflects our attitude towards our trainings. Hence, please be reminded that you have to meet the attendance criteria set by the school [think is 75%?]. I will be taking attendance from the next official training [which means next saturday] onwards. you can only be excused from training if you provide us with an mc or parents letter [maximum 3 per semester].

we also take into account that not everyone is able to afford saturday trainings. Hence an alternative method is that you come once every 2 weeks. Please kindly inform me if you would like to take the alternative method as soon as possible!

secondly is punctuality! we havent exactly been very on time for trainings, well only once in a while. it wont be nice if we make the coach wait. therefore in future, we will all be given 15 minutes allowance! those who come any later will have to do 50 swings for every 5 minutes that you are late! and if you are late for more than 5 times, there will be an increase of 20 swings everytime that you are late.

2. December Trainings

as all of you should know, we will not have any more wednesday trainings in decemeber. nevertheless, it is still important that we continue training especially when next year's a division will be rather early in the year [probably march] . hence, there is an optional training sessions on thursday at felix's club from 12 - 2 pm. we will have to pay for the games and felix will help us and we can help each other too! so for those who wants to go down, please inform felix by monday [1 dec] 23.59. It is optional. you can wear your own home clothes when you come down to bowl as well!

saturday trainings will continue as per normal with uncle francis! yupps! (:

oh yea, a training programme will always be drawn up for the team! so that it is erm. more organized?

tentatitve training dates : 4, 11, 18 [optional] and 6, 13, 20, 27

3. Message passing system

Ruiyi will be helping us to pass messages to the whole team in future [he has unlimited sms!].

4. Private Training

some of you may want to take up private training! if you all wanna like find people to take private training with you! you can inform me too. den we will try to arrange for you guys! ideally 4 per group. it will be around 40 per person? yupps! (:

yes cc, i agree! heehee FOS + sabbats altogether rocks. but there's spring cleaning on thursday... i feel like free labour already.

anyway mr ho spoke to felix and dc, then felix told me:

1. we still have enough funds for 8 training sessions with sam. we're thinking of buying tapes, skin patches, BALL POLISH, microfibre cloth, powders (all types) for communal usage. so... well, that'll cost us at least 3 sessions :( dang.

2. there'll be 1 trial session for the whole team with aloysius, and he agreed to have it FOC. so yay! anytime, anywhere, according to him. how does after school next week sound? :D unfortunately, transport to the venue will cost us another training session with sam. :(

3. there are financial issues to be discussed pretty soon. the school might not be able to subsidise 60% of our training fees next year; they might reduce it to 50%. please think about whether you'll be willing and able to pay more for training next year.

ok that's all haha this post was fun to write.
